<hi style=afpcap>For several decades the incumbent President of the United States has had a specific aircraft allocated for his official duties. The types have varied to include a C-54, C-121A, C-118A, and from 1959 a VC-137A. Three VC-137As were ordered in May 1958, being essentially Boeing 707-120 airliners with special communications equipment installed and a VIP suit for the President and his entourage. Some of the aircraft were allocated a nickname, with the VC-137s being known as 'Air Force One' whenever the President was aboard. The aircraft were delivered during the tenure of President Eisenhower and served for many years until supplemented by a purpose built VC-137B in 1962. The three earlier aircraft were themselves upgraded to VC-137B standard with the fitment of TF33 turbofan engines.</hi>
